Huge fires caused by Nuclear war (particularly from burning urban areas) would loft massive amounts of dark smoke and aerosol particles from the fires into the upper troposphere / stratosphere. At 10-15 kilometers (6-9 miles) above the Earth's surface, the absorption of sunlight would further heat the smoke, lifting it into the stratosphere
The smoke would persist for years, with no rain to wash it out. This would block out much of the sun's light from ever reaching the surface.

Drawn in pencil in 1994 or 95.
Scanned, cropped, colored in photoshop 2009+

Kinda gritty, really gives the feel of some sort of conflict with the cracked mask. Great job with the details by the way!

Wow. Just freaking wow. The details on the mask, the dingy color scheme that somehow gets more depressing with the bright blue- his expression is what really gets me, though.

I can't draw teeth un-grotesquely to save my life, so I'm drooling over these. And that eye. You need to blink, buddy, it looks like your ocular fluids are starting to freeze.

His hair makes me giggle. I suppose sticking a knife in an electrical socket is a plausible way to warm up.

You're right- real men don't NEED ocular fluid. Screw blinking.

You're quite welcome. Sorry for gushing all over your computer, I do that when I find picutres I really like. He's so beautiful :'D

It's a wonderful piece to be done in pencil first then in photoshop.

I really like how it captures the cold. It's almost as if I look outside and it's going to be as bleak as in here.

Wonderful piece.

Thank you. It seems the art you create at a young age is also very imaginative and free from artistic rules and guidelines, its fun to take art you created as a child and go over it with the technical skill and tools of an adult, makes for some good art.

I did the pencil drawing as a teenager. The coloring I did 15 years later. So about 30 years? :-)

I used a wacom tablet to color on top of the scanned pencil drawing. I think deviant needs a category of just mixed media, because alot of my art is half traditional and half digital, but they make you choose one or the other.

If it's a nuclear winter, and gaseous and particulate debris are in the air, why may I ask is he not breathing through a gas mask or some makeshift filtration apparatus?
Presumably he'll die of smoke inhalation and silicosis before he dies of any radiation poisoning.

His equipment has seen better days. There is possibly another part to the mask that was lost or just not attached. The glass visor is broken too, and you can see hes suffered greatly from the harsh environment, to the point where madness could be setting in, and he doesnt really care anymore about the apparatus.

Imma just make my own story up here and assume he's a mutant like the suggestion above...

Maybe he could be a mutant, or maybe he is just coming back to the safezone underground in time to avoid certain death.
